2020 and 2021 have underscored more than ever the importance of being there for each other; which is why we introduced the Flick Community Service Award. Our inaugural recipient was technician Darryn Hughes, who distinguished himself by frequently putting others’ needs before his own. Darren received $5000 to donate to a charity of his choice.
Darryn chose mental health charity Beyond Blue, which provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their situation and wherever they live.
Unfailing Support For Others During Hard Times
Darryn’s award recognises his selflessness on the job, especially when it comes to his support of people who might be struggling or facing personal adversity.
On several occasions Darryn has answered the calls of a young staff member of one of our major builders, who was struggling with severe depression following a family breakdown.
This young man was threatening self-harm and on two occasions Darryn drove out in the middle of the night to sit with him, listen, and provide guidance on where he could seek professional help – which he did. Support services such as Beyond Blue and counselling are crucial in situations like this.
A Community is Strong Together
In the days and weeks that followed, Darryn kept in regular contact just to ensure the young man was getting the support he needed and to let him know that support and counselling were only a phone call away. Darryn still remains in contact with him and checks in on him to see how he’s doing.
