    Millipedes

Millipedes might bug you, but did you know that they are not insects? They are myriapods, which have many legs. These little creatures are great to have in your garden, where they burrow and aerate the soil. However, they are not so great to have in your house. Many species emit poisonous liquids. While millipede poisons are not going to seriously harm you, they can irritate your eyes and skin, which is why millipede pest control is essential.

Native Australian millipedes are rarely an issue. However, there is a type of invasive millipede that causes problems. The Portuguese black millipede can be a real pest. When they get into your house, they get into food, clothing, and bedding. If you squash them, they can stain your floors and smell terrible. Plus, unlike native millipedes, these invaders are bad for your garden!

    Common Millipede Questions

    1. How common are millipedes in Australia?

Millipedes are very common in Australia, with approx. 2000 species found in the country. They can be found in all states and territories, and in a variety of habitats.

    2. What do millipedes eat?

Millipedes are detritivores, meaning they eat dead and decaying organic matter. This includes leaves, wood, and other plant material. Millipedes also play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to break down organic matter and return nutrients to the soil.

    3. Are millipedes dangerous?

Millipedes are not dangerous to humans or animals. They do not bite or sting, and they do not carry any diseases. However, some millipedes can produce a defensive secretion that can irritate the skin if it comes into contact with it.

    Common Millipede Species

    Portuguese Black Millipede

    Lifestyle

The Portuguese Black Millipede (Ommatoiulus Moreleti), is an introduced species which is known for being a nuisance pest. Similar to other species of Julid millipedes, the Portuguese black millipede discharges a yellowish liquid when disturbed to discourage predators. Although the fluid is not dangerous to humans, it can stain skin and material.

    Habits

The Portuguese Black Millipede often reaches plague numbers, especially in southern Australia. In large numbers, the species often invade houses and other dwellings, contaminating food and infesting carpets and bedding. They can also destroy fruit and vegetable crops.

    Spirobolid Millipede

    Lifestyle

Spirobolid Millipedes have rounded bodies and grow to large sizes, with some reaching 20cm. They feed on the soft parts of plants and decaying vegetation. Like other millipedes, Spirobolid Millipedes have defensive chemicals that, although not poisonous to humans, can stain the skin.

    Habits

Spirobolid Millipedes are found in moist areas, especially under logs and in leaf litter. They live in eastern Australia in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria (most species are found worldwide in the tropics).
