Mosquito season is upon us, find out how to keep these bloodsuckers out of your home.

Remove Stagnant Water

Mosquitos have four stages of life: egg, larvae, pupa and adult. The first three of these are spent in water. By removing sources of stagnant water, you effectively remove the mosquitoes’ ability to reproduce.

However, make sure you’re thorough! An area of water as small as an upturned bottle cap is enough for a female mosquito to lay its eggs. So be sure to check the:

  • Gutter – Water can pool in your gutter due to blockage, which is perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Get up and clean out those gutters!
  • Bird baths – Mosquitos take 7 to 10 days to mature, so we recommend changing the water in your bird bath every 5 days.

Set up Mosquito Nets

If entertaining for a small party, consider setting up a tent with hanging mosquito nets. An easy way to keep everyone free from bugs without having to excessive amounts of spray repellent.

Citronella Oil Candles

Citronella is an effective deterrent to having mosquitos in your backyard. It works by masking the scents that attract mosquitos, namely carbon dioxide generated when we exhale. Try placing a few store-bought candles around the yard.

Bug Zapper

If you don’t mind the sound of thousands of volts charging through an intruding mosquito, a Bug Zapper is a good choice. Be sure to place it a couple of metres from your outdoor dining area.
