La Nina. You may have heard the name, but do you understand what it is?
La Nina is one of the two weather systems linked to the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The other is El Nino. In many parts of the world, La Nina is considered the less severe of the two major weather systems. However, in Australia, La Nina is linked to more severe weather than El Nino. Depending on where you live in Australia, you may see a tremendous effect to a moderate impact from La Nina’s weather changes. All of Australia can anticipate increased rainfall, warmer nighttime temperatures, cooler daytime temperatures and possible flooding.
La Nina and Pests
Pests, especially mosquitoes, thrive in moist conditions. La Nina means more moisture, more rainfall, and more standing water. This gives mosquitoes access to breeding grounds and other pests access to the water they need to survive. Increased rainfall also makes breeding conditions more favorable to a number of pests. Flooding can also lead to pests fleeing areas and trying to make their way inside of homes.
