What are black rats?
Black rats arrived in Australia with the First Fleet and spread across the country, as far north as Darwin. They thrive in urban environments. Black rats easily climb up and into elevated troppo houses or walk straight into one storey homes. Once there, they invade wall cavities or the roof and make nests out of shredded material.
Black rats are actually a brown or grey colour with a tail longer than their body. Females have litters of about five to ten young and may have up to six litters per year.
