What are termites?
Termites are insects that belong to the group Isoptera. They are sometimes mistakenly called ‘white ants’, but they’re not white or ants. They eat cellulose, which is found in wood, but large infestations have been known to chew through other materials, including electrical wire.
There are over 300 species of termites in Australia, with only a handful causing damage to homes and buildings. Termites are found everywhere in Australia, including our largest cities and coast areas, such as Manly, Dee Why and Narrabeen.
What damage do termites cause to buildings in Northern Beaches?
Subterranean termites are the most destructive in buildings along the coastline from Manly to Palm Beach, and those close to Garigal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. They live and nest in the soil or inside a tree or log. They come up out from the soil to get into our homes. As their body can dry out in the open air, they create mud tunnels on the outside of the building to gain entry.
Once inside the building, worker termites live for four years, eating tunnels through the wooden structure of the house, 24 hours a day. Workers provide food for the rest of the colony. They tunnel within the wood, the damage hidden until the wood is knocked. As the wood is weakened, structures within the home, such as skirting boards or window sill can be easily broken. In badly damaged homes, floors start to sag and wood feels hollow when tapped. A munching sound can be heard at night in the walls when the house is quiet.

Subterranean termites make their nests in or near the ground. They need to be near a source of moisture to survive, such as damp soil, as their body can dry out.
